The shopping bag in my right hand is heavy, but I’m tough, and I wouldn’t have thought anyone could detect how much it weighed.

And as I’m walking to my car outside Whole Foods, the wind launches a shopping cart across the asphalt toward me. And it’s amusing — on a warm and sunny day when it’s easy to be amused — in a rich suburban world.

And a man notices the cart, too, and grabs it, and tries to push it toward me, and I say “No, no: It’s isn’t mine.”

“I know it isn’t,” he says. “But, maybe you want it?”

“Ha,” I say, “No, I only have to go 20 feet to my car.”

“It was headed right to you,” he says, smiling.

“Yes, it looked funny,” I yell back. “It wanted to help me!”

“Anyone would want to help you,” he says. And we smile, as he wheels the cart away, then yells:

“You have a beautiful soul.”

“So do you,” I say.
